Discovering a Forgotten Grave at Marshy Point

August 22, 2021 @ 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Presented by Daniel Dean

Marshy Point Nature Center and Park is one of Baltimore County’s waterfront properties offering environmental and historical education along the Chesapeake Bay. Until recently, a small, somewhat hidden cemetery was deteriorating in the woods along the trails. In 2020, the Marshy Point Nature Center Council, in conjunction with Baltimore County Recreation and Parks was able to restore a broken headstone with over 200 years of unknown history. Carved in the stone; “In Memory of/CASSANDOR HAMILTON/Who Departed this Life/October 1st 1794/Aged 42 Years.” This led Daniel Dean to research who this figure was and why no one had been able to discover information about their life. The mysterious past and relationship of Cassandor Hamilton has now been solved. Surprising connections were found between the surrounding area and the life of the true interred; Cassandra Hamilton, nee Bond. Join us as we journey into the late 18th century story of this historic park, known as Marshy Point.

Daniel Dean is the Research Chair for the Marshy Point Nature Center Council. An amateur local historian, he enjoys trying to solve questions of the past. Dean is a graduate of Towson University and the Community College of Baltimore County. He works at Baltimore Coffee and Tea Company in Timonium as the wholesale manager for coffee. When he is not spending time with his family, he enjoys metal detecting, bottle dump picking, and learning about the items he finds. He volunteers for archaeological projects to help future generations understand the past.
