David Jahnk, President, NCR/Hereford Volunteers Association
The Northern Central Railway began in 1828 as the Baltimore and Susquehanna Railroad. In the 19th century the Gunpowder River area was rich with mills, quarries, mines, and iron furnaces. The railway served these industries until trucking took over in the 20th century. In 1980, the Department of Natural Resources acquired the abandoned Northern Central Railway right of way in order to create the recreational Northern Central Railway Trail or Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail as we know it today.
David Jahnk previously worked at the National Archives and Records Administration and has been a US history teacher with Harford County Public Schools for 25 years. He also serves as a volunteer park ranger in the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail and Hereford Area of Gunpowder Falls State Park. The NCR/Hereford Volunteers Association was founded in the early 1990s and is staffed by volunteers helping to maintain the park’s operations and programs. The organization hosts regular trail work days and interpretative events.
Part of our Speaker Series. Admission: FREE to HSBC members; Non-members $11.99, Registration required.
