Ray Banks – Negro League Goodwill Ambassador

Baseball season is almost upon us! Please join Ray Banks to hear tales of the legendary players from the Negro Leagues who played in Maryland. Elmira Thornton will speak about the women who played in the Negro Leagues. Their presentation will also feature artifacts, pictures, and video clips from the Hubert V. Simmons, Museum of Negro Leagues Baseball in Owings Mills.

Ray met Mrs. Geraldine Day, widow of Hall of Fame Negro League Player Leon Day, in 1996. With her help, he became the Negro League Goodwill Ambassador and has served in that role ever since. Together with Audrey and Bert Simmons, who played in the Negro League for the Baltimore Elite Giants, Ray co-founded the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum of Maryland in 2008. Mr. Simmons passed away in 2009. In 2014, the museum relocated to the Baltimore County Public Library in Owings Mills and was renamed in his honor.

Ray Banks has been enthusiastic about baseball since childhood. He played baseball in high school at Dunbar in 1964 & 65. After high school, he played un-limited baseball in Baltimore City and County. After leaving leaving baseball he starting playing Double A Fast Pitch Softball. From fast pitch softball, at the age of 60, he started playing Senior Slow Pitch Softball.

Part of our Speaker Series. Admission: FREE to HSBC members; Non-members $11.99, Registration required.
